Yves van Bezooijen is a tough boy of 12 years old, attends the Anne Frank College in Amsterdam and will start secondary school later this year. At Orthodontie Museumplein he has been going through a brace treatment with brackets for over a year. While his teeth were very crooked at the start of the treatment, you can already catch a glimpse of the end result. A beautiful smile with perfectly straight teeth. And that's before his first year at secondary school even begins.
11 years old and already a brace, tell us
'Yves was relatively young, 11 years old, when he started a brace treatment. He was referred by his dentist. The dentist said his teeth were quite crooked and that it was really necessary to see an orthodontist soon. Not all of his teeth had come through yet, so good guidance from an orthodontist was needed,' says Famke, Yves' mother. 'Thanks to the bracket brace, it was possible to start a treatment even before Yves had finished changing teeth. Each time a tooth came through, a bracket could be added.'
Why did you choose Orthodontie Museumplein?
'We found the practice through Google. Not only did Lotte Meereboer's practice have very good reviews, but the location is also perfectly placed. Although there aren't many children in the practice, we actually find the guidance from Orthodontie Museumplein fantastic. The engagement of the practice is so good. You feel really at ease. The building itself is also beautiful and there are just a lot of lovely women working there,' Famke laughs.
Yves: 'and the receptionist has a great sense of humour. You can always have a nice chat with everyone, that's how we discovered that my mum went to the same school as my assistant Wendy.'

And how do you feel about wearing a bracket brace?
Yves: 'the bracket brace I'm wearing is a good brace that I'm not too bothered by. Of course my teeth do hurt a little when it's tightened during an appointment, but after a few days that pain goes away again. Fortunately I've never had so much pain that I couldn't eat. A friend of mine and a girl from my class also wear a brace, so I'm not the only one. I don't feel insecure about it. I want straight teeth. About one more year and then I'm done with my brace, right at the start of secondary school.'
Does anything ever go wrong?
'A few times the wire of my brace has come loose. That can be quite annoying because it pokes into your cheek. Fortunately something like that is fixed quickly. I can always go to the orthodontic practice after school for an appointment, so I never have to miss a lesson. Otherwise the treatment is just going well. Of course you have to check whether there isn't a piece of spinach stuck between your teeth, but in principle I brush my teeth twice a day just like everyone else and use special wax when a bracket pokes my cheek. Oh and I also wear elastics to improve my jaw position. Putting them in and taking them out is actually quite easy. When you eat you just take them out.'
On to the end result
Esther: 'especially when children go to secondary school, looking good starts to play a role. So it's really nice that Yves is finishing his brace treatment right at the start of his secondary school years. On the orthodontist's advice, Yves is now also working with a speech therapist on his swallowing patterns. Those movements had an influence on the poor position of his teeth. It's really good that at Orthodontie Museumplein they look at the complete picture, for the overall health of the whole bite.'Yves: 'one more year and I'm done with my treatment, but that doesn't stop me from smiling already.'
